Track record and current interests

Associate Professor John Dixon has a background in rural general practice prior to taking a research interest in obesity in 1997. He has continued clinical research into obesity and related conditions since completing a PhD titled the “Comorbidity of severe obesity and the changes associated with weight loss” in 2002. He is known internationally for his research and education programs regarding the problems and management of obesity. His background in primary care has enabled a diverse examination of the problems and diseases related to severe obesity, and have facilitated broad vision and collaboration in research activities. He has championed a multidisciplinary approach to the assessment and management of these important conditions. John has an excellent track record in clinical research, and has written over 70 journal articles and book chapters, and has been successful in attracting research grants from industry and the NHMRC. He has been appointed Associate Editor of two International Obesity Journals and has been actively involved as council member with the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity. He has arranged the scientific programs for several national and international conferences and is involved in organizing the scientific programs for two major international congresses to be held in Sydney in 2006. Associate Professor Dixon is an active participant in media discussion regarding the current obesity epidemic, problems of obesity and its management.
