The Evolution of Core
The Centre for Obesity Research and Education (CORE) was established to bring together, as a single entity, the research and educational activities of Professor Paul O’Brien and Dr John Dixon in the area of obesity. The Centre has evolved significantly since then and is now an independent research centre within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences within Monash University in Melbourne .
CORE is structured around a proposal detailing the business case, and governance structure which was developed after consultation with key stakeholders and potential academic collaborative partners. This proposal defined the structure and relationship of the Centre according to the University’s statutes and was approved by Council of the University in December, 2003.
It was recognised that the establishment of CORE and its multidisciplinary approach would fill a critical gap in Australia ’s approach to obesity research and education. The benefits of CORE’s activities would be widespread within Monash University and within the community.
CORE is complemented by a broad range of external collaborations, and with the aspiration to bring together as a consortium, the investigators and educators across Australia who are addressing the problem of obesity.
