The clinical studies program on obesity and weight loss was the central drive to establish CORE and is linked to the clinical program of The Centre for Bariatric Surgery which treats patients who have the problem of severe obesity and who will lose a substantial amount of weight after Lap Band placement. This provides a unique source of research opportunities for CORE. Few major multidisciplinary research groups in the world currently access such a group of patients. Furthermore, the Australian healthcare system provides an environment of excellent quality of care and yet permits research study of these patients at acceptable cost and logistics.
